Eda Clawthorne is the secondary protagonist of The Owl House. She is a rebellious witch whose head has a bounty of one trillion snails on it for whoever gets her. After accidentally bringing a human girl named Luz to the Boiling Isles, Eda, the owl lady, agrees to help her learn witchcraft and becomes her mentor.
I’m Eda, the Owl Lady. The most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles.
Eda the Owl Lady quotes
Edalyn “Eda” Clawthorne was born as Gwendolyn and Dell Clawthorne’s youngest daughter. She was very close to her older sister, Lilith Clawthorne, but they also competed with each other. They were so close that she wanted to join the prestigious Emperor’s Coven with her.
Eda, the owl lady, was also an important member of the Banshees. Even though Eda was one of the most troublesome students in Hexside’s history and caused a lot of problems at school, she was a hard-working witch who wanted to learn every kind of magic and was strong enough to beat her older, more careful sister.
When Principal Faust threatened to kick Eda out of school, she didn’t want to be split up from her sister, so she had to win a blue ribbon from the IFWOT program. If she failed, she would be kicked out of Hexside and wouldn’t be able to try out for the Emperor’s Coven. There, Eda met Raine Whispers, a St. Epiderm bard student who helped her get through the different tests.
Terra Snapdragon, the person in charge of the exam, wasn’t impressed by the IFWOT challenges, so she added one more: a game of Covens and Wilds. Raine was a “Wild Witch,” and Eda was a “Coven Witch,” so they had to fight against each other. Raine lasted the longest out of all of the Wild Witches.
When they were in a tight spot, Eda betrayed her team, leaving Raine and her friend to fight each other. Raine and Eda did not attack each other, though. Instead, they worked together to attack the proctor. Surprisingly, their behavior made Terra laugh, but she didn’t give ribbons to the students. But she also promised to speak up for Eda and Bump so that they could stay at Hexside.
Once Raine moved to Hexside, Eda, the owl lady, became very close to him and his family. At some point in the future, he and Eda would start dating.
By the time of the Emperor’s Coven tryouts, there was a big difference in power between the Clawthorne sisters, and there were only a few spots.
Because of this, Lilith secretly cursed Eda to win the tryouts, but on the day of the match, Eda gave up and didn’t fight her sister. Eda told her sister that covens weren’t “her style,” and she asked her to remember her when she gets famous. But, to her and Lilith’s horror, Eda’s curse came true soon after she started walking away, and she turned into the Owl Beast.
The people who were watching the tryouts were shocked, so they threw rocks at Eda to get her to leave. Eda became known as “The Owl Lady” because of her horrifying owl shape. When Eda was a teenager, her father used a party popper, which accidentally caused her to turn into a beast. The fight that followed between the beast and her father hurt Dell.
Eda told her mother and a healer about the curse, but the healer could only give her a gem that would help her keep track of the beast’s energy. Soon after she got the gem, Eda listened in on a conversation between her mother and the healer. Eda, the owl lady, heard that the curse was currently incurable and that her mother, who was now very angry, was ready to do anything to get rid of it.
Eda was shocked by what her mother said, so she ran out of her room and fell into a portal to the human realm, which she used to get away from her worried mother. Eda is able to stop her curse with elixirs, but they only work for a short time. Eda wouldn’t find out who put the curse on her for a long time.
When she was a young adult, Raine skipped a performance because they were afraid of being on stage. Eda told Raine that they couldn’t run away from their problems forever and that it would be better to “give them a whap in the face.” Eda, on the other hand, liked to hide her problems and often said she was fine when she wasn’t.
Because of this, Raine reluctantly told Eda that they were joining the Bard Coven and that they should go see other people. Eda was upset about the breakup, which made the curse start to work. Even so, when Raine asked Eda about it, she pushed Raine away and wouldn’t let them help her. Even though they are no longer together, Raine took Eda’s advice to heart while they were in the Bard Coven.
Eda was running away from the Emperor’s Coven when she found an unknown island. She went inside the castle to get out of the rain. Inside, she saw a King who had just hatched stacking rocks and thought he was a dog. But Jean-Luc attacked her, so Eda took the hatchling and ran away with it. Jean-Luc did damage one of King’s horns, but Eda was able to fly King and herself to safety. After that, Eda brought King home and gave him a red collar.
One day, she came in and saw King stacking rocks as he did in his castle. She said that he looked like “a king among his subjects.” King said the word “king” over and over, and Eda told him what it meant. King would use the word as his name and think that he used to be a cruel ruler. Eda, the owl lady, never told King how she found him. Instead, she helped him live out his dreams of being the King of Demons. She did, however, keep a piece of King’s broken horn.
Eda’s rebellious nature and lack of a coven made her an outcast in society and a criminal with many enemies, including her sister, who was a member of the Emperor’s Coven. Because she was a criminal and had a curse, she had to stay alone. Her only real friends were her palisman Owlbert, her housekeeper Hooty, and King. Before she met Luz, Eda made a living by selling what she calls “human treasures” at the market.
Sometimes she also sold homemade elixirs and potions. She is also a collector, and she keeps most of the people she finds interesting at home. She doesn’t know much about the things she sells or keeps. For example, she calls a TV a “black shadow box that reflects only sadness” and thinks that batteries, paperclips, deodorants, and buttons are candy.
Eda used the portal for 30 years to collect treasures from people and hide from her many enemies and her mother, who came to visit her every year with a different supposed cure for her curse. She would also sometimes scare the people of Gravesfield while using the name Marylin.
Eda’s Appearance in The Owl House
Edalyn “Eda” Clawthorne (also known as Eda, the owl lady) is a tall, thin woman in her mid to late 40s. Her skin is white, her ears are pointed, her lips are dark red, and her eyes are golden. Her wild hair is thick, long, and has different shades of gray in it.
Eda has a golden screw-in fang that sticks out, orange nails that look like claws, and an oval amber gem on her sternum that showed when the curse was getting worse.
She didn’t have her golden fang when she was young. Instead, she had bright orange hair. Lilith says in “Wing It Like Witches” that Eda’s curse changes the color of her hair, implying that if she were not under a spell, her hair would be the same orange color as when she was a teenager.
As of “Young Blood, Old Souls,” she still looks like she did before. But because she shared the curse with her sister Lilith, her left eye is now silver, and she has a white streak on the left side of her hair. The oval gem on her sternum is now black, which shows that she doesn’t have any magic.
Eda looks like a big owl-like monster when she is the Owl Beast. She has black eyes and long, pointed ears. Her hair starts to turn gray, and gray hairs stick out of her ears. She has dark teal fur all over her body, two dark gray wings, and black feet that look like bird feet. When she is cursed, she doesn’t wear clothes.
But because she accepted her curse, she can now turn into an owl-like harpy at any time. In this form, she has long dark gray hair with a light gray streak on top, yellow eyes with black sclera, and hair coming out of her long ears.
Eda, the owl lady, has gray wings that stick out of her back like an owl’s, and her two-toned maroon and red dress now looks like it’s part of her body and covers part of her face. Her dress has dull spikes that stick out from her shoulders and arms.
Like an owl, Eda has light gray fur on her feet with dark gray claws. Her hands have small yellow claws and look like they belong to a monster. Her hands and feet are also the same color as her clothes.
In “King’s Tide,” Raine cut off her right arm so that it could never be put back together again. This was done to stop the draining spell from killing her.
When she is swapped with King, she looks and acts a lot like King, but her eyes and eyelashes are gold.
Eda’s first outfit was a two-toned, sleeveless red dress with a ripped hem and gray leggings. Her jewelry was made up of two round orange earrings and a round amber ring. She wore boots with high heels that were red. Her night clothes are a plum sweater with amber cuffs, a stained long violet nightgown, and light yellow bunny slippers.
In “Wing It Like Witches,” Eda takes off her ring and gives it to Lilith Clawthorne after their rugby match, so she doesn’t have to go back to Emperor Belos empty-handed.
Starting with the second season episode, “Keeping Up A-fear-ances,” she now wears a longer three-toned maroon dress with mid-length sleeves and a ripped hem, along with light gray leggings. She no longer wears her earrings, and her boots are now a dark gray color.
In her youth, she wore a Hexside School Potions track uniform with yellow sleeves and leggings, black flats, a gray tunic with a black belt, and a black cowl with a golden button.
In “Eda’s Requiem,” as a young adult, she wore a red dress with ripped sleeves and a ripped maroon hem. She also wore the same red boots and earrings from her first outfit. She had her hair pulled back into a ponytail with a red band. At this point, two small gray streaks can be seen near the top of her forehead.
In “Echoes of the Past,” Eda’s memories from eight years before the start of the show come back to her. She has two gray streaks in her orange hair, which is short but still thick and messy. In the first season, Eda, the owl lady, wore the same outfit.
