Mississauga officials are issuing a strong reminder to residents as the unofficial start of summer approaches: fireworks are only permitted on Victoria Day, not throughout the long weekend.
In Mississauga, fireworks are allowed on private property for four designated days each year: Victoria Day, Canada Day, Lunar New Year, and Diwali. However, it’s crucial to note that fireworks are only permitted on the day of the celebration and must conclude by midnight.
To address concerns and streamline the process, the city has introduced an online complaint system, enabling residents to report fireworks-related issues more efficiently. In 2022 alone, Mississauga received 300 complaints about fireworks, prompting the implementation of this user-friendly platform.
“While some residents enjoy the spectacle of fireworks lighting up the sky, others have reservations regarding their timing and location,” the city stated in a press release.
Upon submission of a complaint, the city initiates a response and dispatches law enforcement officers to investigate the matter promptly.
Mississauga has launched an online fireworks complaint form to prepare for the upcoming Victoria Day weekend, empowering residents to voice their concerns effectively. The form is accessible anytime, allowing individuals to register grievances conveniently.
It’s worth noting that the neighboring city Brampton prohibited the sale and use of personal fireworks in 2022 due to concerns over the “out of control” nature of firework usage, according to several council members.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable fireworks experience, Mississauga encourages residents to review the local fireworks by-law before engaging in any celebrations involving fireworks. Compliance with the by-law is essential for a harmonious and responsible celebration. Individuals concerned about fireworks can also contact 311 or (905) 615-4311 outside city limits for further assistance.
While the Victoria Day long weekend brings the excitement of backyard fireworks, it is crucial to prioritize safety. London, Ontario, residents are reminded of the restrictions governing firework usage within the city limits. The city emphasizes the importance of adhering to the firework by-law and warns that violations will be strictly enforced.
Mayor Josh Morgan of London clarifies that fireworks are only permitted in backyards on Monday, May 22, between sundown and 11:00 p.m., exclusively for the celebration of Victoria Day. Any fireworks on other days without a display permit or council permission may result in enforcement action and fines.
According to Matt Hepditch, deputy fire chief of fire prevention and public education with the London Fire Department, the number of fireworks complaints has risen in the city since the pandemic. Both fire department inspectors and municipal compliance officers will diligently enforce the fireworks by-law during the weekend.
Hepditch emphasizes that fireworks should only be handled and discharged by responsible adults over 18 who are fully aware of the hazards and exercise caution. Discharging fireworks in parks or onto streets, highways, lanes, squares, or public spaces without a valid permit is strictly prohibited.
As Victoria Day approaches, fireworks businesses, such as Bob’s Fireworks, are experiencing a surge in activity. Michael Leff, son of Bob Leff, reports a significant increase in sales leading up to the holiday.
With safety in mind, Leff advises residents to be mindful of the space available when setting off fireworks, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
Let us celebrate Victoria Day responsibly, respecting the regulations and guidelines set forth by our municipalities. By being considerate neighbors and prioritizing safety, we can ensure that everyone has a delightful and memorable holiday weekend.
