How to Become a Fashion Consultant

The fashion industry is where many young dreamers would love to end up. The fame that comes from having something you made being worn by a celebrity or the satisfaction in knowing that people are willing to pay hundreds of dollars for an article of clothing (or, in some cases, an entire outfit) you put together can be very alluring. However, most people who want to become fashion consultants have yet to learn how to get from point A to point B. Like any job, though, there is a fairly simple and straightforward list of qualifications that you should have.

The first step that any hopeful fashion consultant needs to follow is getting their education. Having a bachelor’s degree in fashion, textiles, or some other fashion-related field is a good starting point. Getting a double major, possibly in fashion and marketing. Graduating from a reputable university will give you a hands-on education, help you make contacts in the field of fashion, and teach you just how it is that the industry really works from the inside out. These are all things you’ll need to become a fashion consultant.

While studying, attempt to put together as much of a resume and portfolio as possible. Some of it will undoubtedly end up being the fashion you’ve designed. Still, someone who designs fashion should be knowledgeable about what fashion works and what fashion doesn’t. Your resume will likely consist of professors or internship bosses, but they’re good solid references. You have to prove that you know what fashion is good, and it helps if you have good references that vouch for your skills to future employers.

The next step is to move from the position of the designer to consultant. This jump requires a lot of preparation, so it’s best to start early. Read about what fashion is coming out of, and develop a knowledge of styles and colors. Learn what skin tones will work with what colors, and figure out how to flatter any body type. If you can keep this running tally of what fashions are available and develop an eye for what looks good, then you’ve accomplished the most important part of being a fashion consultant. To advertise your fashion knowledge, make sure you put yourself together well. No one trusts a skinny cook, and no one will believe you’re a good fashion consultant if you can’t even pull your own outfits together.

Beyond these steps, though, you must go out and put yourself in the market. Apply for consultant positions, and make contacts with people wherever you go. The more contacts you make and the positive influence you have, the more likely you are to find yourself offered work as a consultant. However, you have to make sure your resume stays in circulation, and you should try to ensure that you’re a regular on the local fashion scene in your area.
