I lovingly refer to my purse as either the “Mary Poppins Bag” or the “black hole.” It seems that when I want my lip balm, I find my keys. And when I want my keys, I finally get my hands on that lip balm, but the keys are nowhere to be found. The culprit, of course, is an unorganized purse. It seems that even purses that come with dozens of zippers and compartments still fall prey to the dreaded “black hole” monster.
While keeping your purse organized does require exerting some energy and time, it can be done. Check out these four ways you can get a more organized purse.
Purse Inserts
Your purse becomes a catch all the second you sling it over your shoulder. How do you prevent that from happening? Make sure everything has its place. Lots of purse inserts are made to help with this problem. For example, the Pouchee creates more pockets and compartments to help you find a place for all your belongings, including lip products, pocket change, writing utensils, and receipts. The Container Store and eBay also have some great buys.
Purge Weekly
Easier said than done, right? But just how much change is swimming at the bottom of your bag after a day or two? How many receipts are fluttering about? And let’s not even talk about the crumbs that somehow always make their way into the deepest corners. To keep your purse organized, you have to be diligent when it comes to cleaning it out. Hold yourself accountable to at least one weekly purge. Only keep what you need inside.
Clip Keys to Strap
One of the most frustrating things in the world is not being able to find your keys when you’re in a rush or holding 12 grocery bags on either arm. Make finding your keys a cinch by clipping them to your handbag when you’re not using them.
Use a Flashlight
I’m not saying you need to carry around an industrial-sized flashlight, but there are miniature LED lights that attach to your keychain and don’t take up much space. If you know where your keys are (clipped to your purse handle, right?), then you can use the flashlight to help you find what you’re looking for. Even in the brightest daylight, purses can be rather dark. Another way to help with the darkness is to carry a purse with a pale interior.
